Sensitive Periods
When it comes to sensitive periods in brain development, you must start early. In chapter six, the sensitive period it spoke of was language development. While researchers have not been able to find the exact boundaries of the sensitive period, it is shown that the ease at learning language does decrease over time. This goes to show that the younger, the better.

It is very true that the Sensitive Period is crucial to a baby's development. I know from personal experience that a baby learns a lot in the first few years of it's life. The things they learn are the building blocks of what they need to live in our society. The book gave a great example of the importance of the sensitive period by discussing the effects of a deaf baby and how far behind they will be if not given assistance in hearing until after this sensitive period. Have you ever noticed how much a baby learns in even just the first year of their life? It completely amazes me. My nephew is only a year old and can already walk and talk!
ReplyDeleteGood point about the younger the better. The book descibes the sensitive period for almost all activites we learn in development, it also gives a grey area of when we should be learning them. But I agree with you that developing early probably couldn't hurt us, but later is proven to be bad. Weird how that works
